Solid Waste Generation and Disposal

Date of commencement: 90's

The assumptions of sustainability adopted by MRN are strongly evident in his management of industrial solid waste, whose pillars are: legal compliance, internal controls, the correct allocation and consolidation of the process of implementation of the strategic concept of reducing the generation of waste tires.

The waste generated by different areas of MRN are assigned to the collection points and control located in the area of the mine and the port area, which are quantified, segregated by compatibility and stored until the beginning of the process of allocation. This process considers the nature of the waste and directs them to the events of incineration, recycling, re-refining and co-processing.

MRN follows the entire process of allocation, and still requires controls and Certificates of Final Destination, issued by the contractors, whose performances - environmental, operational and occupational health - are validated periodically by contracted audits, they devote also intensive focus in the traceability of waste.

Important documentary record, the Inventory of Industrial Solid Waste, held annually, is the instrument of the statutory disclosure agreements made by MRN on this subject. Inventory is recorded at IBAMA, the State Department of Environment (SEMA) and the National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA), following the environmental laws in the country.

Sorting and Composting Plant

The environmental concern also exists when it comes to separation and appropriate disposal of waste generated in the wet and dry residential villages from the urban center. Therefore, we created the UTC (Sorting and Composting Unit) Porto Trombetas.

The process of separation of the waste begins with the manual separation and subsequent packing of which may be recycled, cardboard, rigid plastics, PET bottles, cans and aluminum cans.

All cardboard is transported and donated to the Republic of Emmaus, in Bethlehem, which sells the material to recyclers or use in the production of reusable waste materials such as books, notebooks, among others. The money generated from recycling to community projects that institution, which serves children and teenagers of Bethlehem The remainder of the waste material is collected and sold as scrap.

The wet waste is also used by the company. We send the waste for composting, which saw organic fertilizer. The fertilizer is used on the project's Green Garden Adding MRN, which encourages the planting of home gardens in the village.
