Meliponiculture Project

Date Created: 2010
Main beneficiaries: farmers of Terra Santa.

The chain of honey production in Pará is taking the first steps toward consolidation, since we entered into partnership with the Brazilian Service to Support Micro and Small Enterprises (Sebrae) and the Union of Rural Workers of Terra Santa (STTR) for implementing the first production project organized in the city.

Until the beginning of the project, the producers of the municipality worked individually, with only one species of stingless bees and rudimentary techniques used in the creation process. The bees were reared in bamboo set on the edge of the roofs of houses. There was one harvest per year, which would be waste of young future worker bees, and there was the separation of dirt. Currently, five species of bees are produced in the communities Redobra, Alemã and Casa Grande.

Through the project, farmers will receive training and participate in technical exchanges to meet the production of other states where beekeeping is already an established practice. The project goal is to help local producers to reach the consumer market through the formation of cooperatives, adoption of business management techniques and new technology, implementation of environmental management in the production process, access to credit, among other actions.
