Sustainable Territories Program

Creation date: 2015

Main beneficiaries: communities in the municipalities of Oriximiná, Faro and Terra Santa

With 12 million hectares (the equivalent of Portugal's territory), the program encompasses three municipalities and a total population of 88,000 people, including the urban population, farmers, riverine, indigenous and quilombola communities. The main economic activities developed in this territory are the collection of Brazil nuts, subsistence agriculture, fishing, logging, mining and cattle raising. Today mining is the activity that most generates income in Oriximiná and, little by little, will also be contributing to the income of Faro and the Holy Land.

The program is expected to last 15 years and works on four pillars:

Public Management: support to the management of prefectures and secretariats of Faro, Holy Land and Oriximiná in the planning of their public policies and services, in the qualification of the servers, in the search and management of more resources to implement projects that can benefit the entire population in the areas of Health, education, infrastructure, among others.

Social Capital: support the communities and leaders in your organization, seeking to improve their participation in council meetings and conferences. The goal is to help the population exercise their rights and duties.

Economic Development: supporting the development and improvement of the economy through potential and developed production chains (such as chestnut, copaiba, fishing, furniture, wood, livestock, agriculture, tourism), considering the conservation of protected areas and the preservation of traditional crops.

Environmental Management: Direct support to environmental secretariats to guarantee conservation, licenses for new activities in municipalities and the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR).

The first activities of the program in the territory counted on the accomplishment of municipal diagnoses, which signaled the opportunities of economic-social development for each municipality. The process of construction of the actions has been done in a participatory manner, both with the presence of municipal governments and society. The goal of the involvement of society as a whole is to guarantee sustainability to the actions to be developed in the long term so that they can continue independently of changes in the political context of each territory.

The program is created by Mineração Rio do Norte and is performed by three Public Interest Social Organizations, with recognized experience in the areas of environment, economy, public management and strengthening of society: Imazon (Institute of Man and the Environment in the Amazon), ECAM (Amazon Conservation Team) and Agenda Pública (Public Agenda).
