Quilombo Project

Date Created: 2000
Main beneficiaries: communities of Oriximiná.

For eleven years now we have been partners to Fundação Esperança (Hope Foundation) and to the Municipal Health Secretariat of Oriximiná in the Quilombo Project, which has achieved satisfactory results in improving health and quality of life for maroon populations living in western Pará.

On a monthly basis, 18 communities along the banks of the Trombetas River are visited by the boat Barão do Mar, which takes to isolated communities a team of 12 to 15 professionals - doctors, nurses and technicians. The goal is to provide communities with curative and preventive assistance.

The sessions take place in the barracks of the communities and the work has generated positive results for the reduction of cases of diseases in adults or in child malnutrition, which have fallen from 39% to 7% since the beginning of the project activities.

In addition to that service, the Quilombo project also includes activities on health education, including guidance on breastfeeding, complementary feeding, hygiene and water treatment, prevention of diseases such as diarrhea, urinary tract infection and cancer of the cervix and prostate, as well as information about the importance of vaccines and family planning.

For us, contributing to the quality of life in our area of influence is acting in line with our policy of social responsibility.
