Malaria Control Project

Date Created: 2004
Main beneficiaries: riverside-dwelling communities.

We developed the Malaria Control Project over a decade ago in isolated communities in western Pará. The result of this initiative is a significant reduction in the number of cases of the disease.

We assist twenty-one communities of the upper Trombetas River with a series of preventive actions, which consist in performing household sprays (on their walls and in damp and dark places), fogging (fumacê) and distribution of informational pamphlets on ways to prevent the disease.

The actions are promoted every four months, always considering the periods of greater spread of the mosquito Anopheles, which transmits the infection. When the project began, initially restricted to Porto Trombetas, the number of records of the disease reached 1,126 cases.

The project is undertaken by MRN through the company SOS – Serviços Operacionais de Saneamento, and also has a partnership with the Porto Trombetas Hospital (HPTR), which monitors the numbers of incidence of that infection; the Quilombo Project, which operates in communities with actions education, and the Department of Endemic Diseases Department of Health of the City of Oriximiná, which tracks the statistics of the disease, makes the loan of equipment and provides professional (microscopist) for exams in the communities.
