The Mineração Rio do Norte Memory House was designed to be a space open to the Porto Trombetas community and to visitors from various parts of Brazil and of the world. It's main objective is to promote co-existence and thought about local history, thus helping to reaffirm regional culture and identity. This space was officially opened on 26 August 2000. Two years later, the Memory House has reached a total of 2 thousand visitors, comprising members of local communities (students and residents of Porto Trombetas and of neighboring riverside communities), visitors and shareholders. The Memory House operates in the first house to have ever been built in Porto Trombetas, and which was derelict and earmarked for demolition. The idea of getting it revamped in order to offer the community a new leisure activity was the brainchild of the then director of Administration and Finance here at MRN, Ozair Pereira de Siqueira. On top of the physical restoration of the building, landscaping and adaptations that allow both multimedia presentations and formal and informal meetings, an exhibition has also been set up, focusing on the key managers of the company. This exhibition includes panels with photographs and texts, pieces, mock-up models and other materials, covering four main themes, namely: the history of MRN; from bauxite to aluminum; the Amazon region and the environmental issue; and the Trombetas Valley. With a view to developing these themes, six months were spent on thorough and painstaking research activities, involving a bibliographical and documental study, recording of personal declarations and iconographic research. Thanks to the Memory House project, in 2001 MRN was awarded the Regional Prize from the Brazilian Association of Business Communication - Aberje. This space is a living proof of the company's firm commitment, together with its shareholders, employees and society as a whole, to generating riches while upholding the deepest of respect for humanity and nature in general.
