This edition of the Environment Report brings to you the latest developments of Mineração Rio do Norte environmental work issues. The investments the Company makes in important environmental researches are as significant as the expenditures on recording their outcomes, such is the case of the book on the Batata Lake, edited under MRN’s sponsorship and reporting on 13 years’ research towards rehabilitating the impacted ecosystem. ISO 14001 is another topic: audits to the effect of obtaining the ISO 14001 certification were completed in December and the official document was granted in January 2002. The awareness efforts reached the whole community as well as MRN and Contractors’ workers.

New information on reforestation monitoring indicates that the forest restoration is progressing in quite a positive way and so is the case of the tailings ponds; hydroseeding on the SP 2/3 South pond, that was the third tailing pond to be re-vegetated, has already been completed.
