Objective Biological Reserves fall within the category of Units of Full Protection and have as their main purpose the preservation of nature, only permitting the indirect use of natural resources, with the exception of the special cases laid down in the law. The Trombetas River Biological Reserve was set up by Federal Decree nº 84,018 of 21 September 1979, with an area estimated at 385 thousand hectares within the municipality of Oriximiná, in the State of Pará, on the left bank of the Trombetas River. The Management Plan for this Biological Reserve was drawn up in 1982 for the Brazilian Institute for Forest Development - IBDF, by the Brazilian Foundation for Preservation of Nature - FNCN. The review of this plan was in order to adapt its content to the new reality and also to guide its implementation. The
agreement between Mineração Rio do Norte and IBAMA has the aim of,
making funds available for the drawing up of the plan. In view of this, a consultancy
company, STCP Project Engineering, was hired, now being responsible for the development
and co-ordination of the work.
