Environmental and Heritage Education Project - Agreement with the Emílio Goeldi Museum

Objective

At the end of 1999, environmental education technicians from the Emílio Goeldi Museum of the State of Pará (MPEG) were invited to visit the premises of Mineração Rio do Norte and riverside communities along the Trombetas River, with the aim of getting more familiar with the local reality, and then use this as a starting point on which to build a project of environmental and heritage education to be implemented together with archaeological salvage to be carried out on company land and on the river banks.

Operating Structure

A Project of Environmental and Heritage Education was set up with the objective of creating close cooperation between Mineração Rio do Norte and the Emílio Goeldi Museum of the State of Pará, for the carrying out of education activities with the communities within the immediate vicinity of the company, striving to make them aware of the importance of preservation of the region's environmental heritage. This project is managed by archaeologists from MPEG.

Results Obtained

Lectures, courses and workshops in environmental preservation have been implemented, contributing to greater awareness of this issue by riverside communities, and to the general preservation of the environment.
