Mineração Rio do Norte takes pride in being conscientious and active in its role as a citizen company. For MRN, the actions of social responsibility that are taken today are examples of the company's respect for and commitment to the future of the communities that lie within its area of influence. The company invests in the region through social projects, especially the support for communities that are the remains of the former quilombos, on the banks of the Trombetas River. Four main pillars support these projects: health, education, the environment and self-sustainable development. In education, the main aim is to create a culture geared to learning, meeting the needs of the people, boosting their educational, cultural and professional backgrounds. In health, MRN seeks to provide the population of Porto Trombetas and riverside communities with a healthy, happy and productive life, through actions of health assistance, occupational and preventive medicine. In relation to the environment, the continuous search for technologies that either reduce or eliminate the waste that results from the company's operations, the promotion of upkeep and preservation of the preserved areas, and scientific studies that are beneficial to the world community are all also part of MRN's daily routine. Finally, MRN seeks to contribute in the formulation of bases for the sustainable development of the region, encouraging the production of items that are not aggressive to the ecosystem, seeking their strategic acceptance by the market, producing experiments for later introduction in other locations, apart from contributing to the lessening of the basic privations of these populations and increasing regional development. Over more than 20 years of commercial operation, MRN has already devised and developed more than 40 social projects. The Trombetas
Valley Foundation, a non-profit organization set up by MRN,
has played a key role in the maintenance of cultural, social, and
educational and sports well being of the residents of Porto Trombetas,
where the company is located, and adjacent communities. Main Social Projects Developed by Mineração Rio do Norte Environment ‘Pé de Pincha’ Project The ‘Pé de Pincha’ project aims at the conservation of threatened species of Amazon chelonians such as the turtle, the ‘tracajá’ and the ‘pitiú’. The project is carried out in the municipalities of Oriximiná and Terra Santa, and is a partnership involving MRN, the University of Amazonas and Brazilian Environment Institute (IBAMA). Agroforestry Systems This is a project aimed enriching the soil of those areas that have already been used by the communities. It stimulates the agricultural, environmental and economic development and introduces modern techniques for improving the soil and the products which in addition to being some of the main items in the region’s food supply, is one of the main sources of income generation for the communities. Sustainable Development Fish Farming Farming of ‘tambaqui’ (black pacu) fish
in net tanks. This project aims at providing the riversiders with
an alternative for income generation and consequent improvement of
their life quality. MRN donates the net tanks, the fingerlings, ration
for the first cycles and gives training courses for the beneficiaries. The ‘Quilombo’ Project This project is an agreement between Mineração Rio do Norte and Santarém’s Fundação Esperança and on a monthly basis provides a boat equipped with medical resources and a team of doctors and nurses to assist the riverside communities. Approximately 400 consults are provided per 6-day journey, amounting to 11 journeys a year. In 2007 alone, 14,500 people were assisted. Malaria Control Project A project consisting of preventive measures to control and reduce infant and adult morbidity and mortality. This program assists approximately 5 thousand riversiders. The figures show the efficiency of the project. In 1999, when the program was commenced, some 1,126 cases of malaria were recorded in the region. In 2007, this figure plummeted to 2 cases only. Education Digital Inclusion MRN contributes for the adaptation of computing classrooms in Oriximiná, Terra Santa and Faro by donating computers to local institutions. In Porto Trombetas the Company provides coaching for teachers in order to create responsible facilitators and multipliers through the dissemination of knowledge to community members. Education for Adults A partnership between SESI (Social Service of Industry)
and MRN which aims at providing education, from primary to high school,
for the entire community of Porto Trombetas and the residents of neighboring
communities within the age range for ordinary education. MRN provides
all the necessary infrastructure and bears the contractual costs.
